The Guam Department of Education kicked off the 2025-2026 academic year with 39 of its 41 schools officially opening their doors to students Thursday morning.
According to GDOE officials, preparations went smoothly across the island. All operational campuses were cleared and ready to welcome students.
GDOE Spokesperson Damen Borja has been touring campuses throughout the summer and as the academic year begins.
“All our teams, facility maintenance teams, have been working diligently and have been working very hard all over the summer to make sure that every school can be ready,” said Borja.
While student registration is still ongoing, the department says campuses are fully staffed and ready. GDOE is continuing to accept teacher applications, but Borja emphasized that there’s no last-minute hiring rush. Officials say they’re managing with the current team of educators already in place.
The only hiccup on the first day came from a traffic accident on Route 1, which delayed the start of classes for southern schools by about an hour. Despite that, GDOE reports that all schools that opened today are fully operational and prepared for the year ahead.
