Two years after welcoming a new superintendent to the island, the Guam Board of Education is again searching for a top administrator.
During a meeting Tuesday afternoon, board members formed a committee to decide what criteria they are looking for in superintendent applicants.
Superintendent Kenneth Swanson, who was selected in December 2022, didn’t start on the job until July 2023. Last month, he announced he would be leaving.
“Have your work session, come up with your criteria, present it to the board and then we’ll work from there,” Board Chairman Angel Sablan said Tuesday. “But time is of the essence… now it’s practically August, so we have four more months.”
Sablan said Swanson would be leaving the Department of Education at the end of December.
“We are looking at appointing an acting superintendent at least 60 days before that to work together with Dr. Swanson so that we do have a transition period, as to what’s going on at GDOE.” Sablan said. “Unlike Dr. Swanson, who was just put in a position and there was no transition from the previous superintendent.”
