The Joint Region Marianas (JRM) in Guam once posted about its Pride Month event, celebrating LGBTQ+ service members and the military’s commitment to diversity. But that most, and many like it, will soon disappear.
A Pentagon memo issued on Feb. 26 orders the removal of content promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) across military social media platforms.
The Pentagon is scrubbing diversity and inclusion content from military social media accounts. The directive follows executive orders from President Donald Trump aimed at dismantling DEI programs. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reinforced the policy in a Jan. 25 memo titled Restoring America’s Fighting Force.
Military commands, including Joint Region Marianas, Andersen Air Force Base, and Naval Base Guam, have already begun compliance. Their Facebook pages now carry a standard message stating: “Content on this platform is being reviewed and removed to align with the President’s executive orders and DoD priorities, in accordance with DoD 5400.17, official use of social media for public affairs purposes.”
The memo, signed by the assistant secretary of defense for public affairs, Sean Parnell, requires all DEI-related materials, including references to critical race theory, gender ideology, and cultural awareness months, to be purged.
If full removal isn’t possible by Mar. 5, all content from the Biden administration’s tenure must temporarily be taken offline.
