Okkodo High School has won this year’s High School Mock Trial Competition. In their win, they defeated Guam High in a tense final at the Supreme Court of Guam.
The Bulldogs’ prosecution team triumphed in a fictitious opioid overdose case with a 2-to-1 decision. Okkodo is set to represent Guam in the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Phoenix, Arizona.
This victory marked a return to success for Okkodo, who had previously won the championship in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
At Nationals, they will be competing against teams from across the United States, the Northern Mariana Islands, and South Korea.
Jessica Lee, the attorney coach for Okkodo’s team, said she is very excited for her team to experience competing nationally. She told KPRG that her team has put in a lot of work to come this far. In an interview she spoke about their key to success as a team, for them, it is the ability to be adaptable within their work ethic.
“The students need to be able to adapt to whatever is thrown at them. Whether it be strange questions presented by the court, or opposing counsel, throwing a different question that was unexpected.”
The team is raising funds for their trip to Arizona as they await for official National Mock Trial materials. It’ll be released sometime in April.
Guam high schools are now being encouraged to start recruiting participants and preparing now for the next mock trial season in September 2025.
