The Biden administration’s plan for offshore wind energy near Guam is now on hold after a recent executive order from Donald Trump.
The Biden administration planned to develop offshore wind farming on Guam. This would mean leasing federal waters surrounding the island to expand renewable energy and boost the island’s energy independence.
Trump’s January 20th executive order halted offshore wind leasing and calls for a review of federal wind permitting practices.
It was added within the executive order that the withdrawal does not apply to leasing related to any other purposes such as, but not limited to, oil, gas, minerals, and environmental conservation.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) spokesperson, John Romero, confirmed in an email that the order suspends new approvals, permits and leases for offshore wind projects until the review is completed.
For now, Guam, BOEM, and federal officials await further updates on this project.
