$11.5 million has been awarded to Motorola Solutions, which will transition Guam's 30-year-old public safety communication infrastructure to a modern Project 25 (P25) Land Mobile Radio (LMR) system.
At a press conference on Jan. 13, Guam Police Department (GPD) Chief Stephen Ignacio said that the current communications system, implemented in 1989, "was way past its useful life," and no longer supports the island's growing needs.
According to Motorola Solutions, the new P25 system will enhance coverage in the northern part of the island, encrypt secure communication, integrate with LTE and Wi-Fi networks for broader
connectivity and provide cybersecurity measures.
"These enhancements will help first responders and government agencies continue to communicate and stay connected in the most harsh environments," said Josh Mendoza, territory Vice President of Motorola Solutions.
The Guam Police Department (GPD) has partnered with Hawaii-based consultancy Banyan Networks to assess the current LMR inventory and infrastructure. Banyan Networks will provide recommendations for the new system design.
The project is expected to be operational within approximately two years.
