Cook Islands Tourism is being encouraged to establish a debt or equity fund to seed investments for tourism projects on the outer islands, known as the Pa Enua.
This initiative was flagged in the Public Accounts Committee's (PAC) annual review.
The proposed debt or equity fund would finance projects including holiday homes, small businesses, and agricultural ventures. This approach aims to empower local communities and promote environmentally responsible tourism practices.
The Committee has met with Cook Islands Tourism chief executive Karla Eggelton to discuss their performance
report.
The PAC noted that each island is developing its own unique tourism strategy. For instance, Tongareva is planning to welcome up to 50 visitors each week and has proposed a new airport that could significantly boost travel to the area.
Additionally, the committee emphasized the importance of educating visitors to respect local cultural traditions and values of the Cook Islands, especially on dress wear and church services.
