Pacific island economies must adopt responsible tourism by targeting environmentally conscious visitors.
That’s the message emphasized by former Palau President, Tommy Remengesau, at a University of Guam presentation in August 2024.
He stressed the importance of attracting visitors who respect and value what Palau offers. He argued that high-end tourism was more sustainable and beneficial, for both the local population and the environment.
However, with rising military activities in Palau, Remengesau is concerned. "There’s a market for controlled military tourism but I want to stress the word tourism. Activities are different from tourism," he said.
He called for more transparency from Palau’s current government, as he runs for president against the incumbent leader and brother-in-law, Surangel Whipps Jr.
